NEWTOWN, PA — Quaker Publisher, Gabriel Ehri, will speak on Reflections on the 2024 World Quaker Plenary in South Africa at the Newtown Quaker Meetinghouse, 219 Court Street, at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, September 22. Following the presentation, there will be worship in the manner of Friends at 11:00 a.m. with people speaking out of silence as they are moved to do so. The public is welcome at all events.

Gabe Ehri traveled with colleagues to Johannesburg in August to attend the World Quaker Plenary, which gathered over 250 Quakers representing six continents and the full spectrum of Quaker practice and theology. He’ll share some reflections on the people and ideas he encountered there and talk about what it might mean for Quakers here at home, and for Friends Publishing among Friends worldwide.

Gabriel Ehri is a member of Green Street Friends Meeting in Philadelphia, where he has served as meeting clerk and as clerk of the Care & Counsel Committee. As clerk he helped guide Green Street’s discernment about reparations, as well as its navigation of the Covid pandemic.

Ehri has served on the staff of the Quaker nonprofit Friends Publishing for 20 years and has been Executive Director since 2011. In addition to the monthly Friends Journal, which has roots dating back to 1827, Friends Publishing’s portfolio of Quaker media has grown considerably in the last decade. The launch of the QuakerSpeak video series, the Quakers Todaypodcast, and the Quaker.org site for newcomers — all part of an organizational commitment to the radical accessibility of the Quaker message — have helped grow the audience to over half a million people per year, educating many newcomers to Quakerism who continue to join Quaker meetings worldwide.

Gabe lives in Mount Airy, Philadelphia, with his wife and two teenage sons.

Newtown Friends Meeting, co-founded by the Quaker artist and minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, holds services every First Day (Sunday). During the school year, First Day classes for children and adults are at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship is at 11:00 a.m. Professional childcare is provided. All meetings are open to the public and visitors are warmly welcomed.
