Tama Adelman, a former US Army nurse, and Cathy Evans, a retired Human Resources Administrator, will talk about their first-hand experiences of three trips for relief work to war-torn Ukraine at the Newtown Quaker Meetinghouse, 219 Court Street, at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
Posted in bold lettering on a sign they saw on one of their trips to the Ukraine was “IF FREEDOM HAS A NAME, ITS NAME IS UKRAINE.” Adelman and Evans will discuss, “Ukraine: A People Standing Strong.”
Since the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Cathy Evans and Tama Adelman have each made 3 trips to Ukraine to deliver medical equipment and supplies.
Cathy and Tama said, “Democracy is often an abstraction. War is not. We are sharing our journey with you to put a face on Ukraine. We promised to tell their stories and how each of them are trying to save their country.”
Cathy Evans is a retired Human Resources Administrator, training Consultant, Yoga teacher, hiker, walker, snorkeler and lover of the outdoors. She has strong skills in organizing projects and completing administrative tasks. Cathy has a long history of volunteering in San Diego County with refugees and homeless as well as volunteering in international projects in Guatemala, Zanskar, India, Turkey and refugee camps in Greece and Ukraine.
Tama Adelman is a former US Army nurse who served in a war zone, a retired registered nurse, yoga teacher, health educator, and an international health care volunteer. She has merged the two passions—travel and service—offering medical volunteer support to organizations working in countries in crises.
Cathy and Tama will be telling stories of people they met in Ukraine and sharing experiences through the eyes of Ukrainians of what it is like to be living daily in a country under attack and fighting desperately for its independence and democracy.
Following the presentation, there will be worship in the manner of Friends at 11:00 a.m. with people speaking out of silence as they are moved to do so. The public is welcome at all events.
Newtown Friends Meeting, co-founded by the Quaker artist and minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, holds services every First Day (Sunday). During the school year, First Day classes for children and adults are at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship is at 11:00 a.m. Professional childcare is provided. All meetings are open to the public and visitors are warmly welcomed.
