NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — The Historic Newtown Friends Meeting on Court Street will open its fall season of First Day Classes (Sunday School) for children and adults with a “Welcome Back” snack and visit at 9:30 a.m. on First Day (Sunday), September 8.
There will be outdoor worship, weather permitting, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
At 9:30 a.m., finger food, juice, and coffee will be served on the Meeting House grounds, after which children will meet with their teachers to get to know them and discuss the year’s program schedule.
Meeting for Business will be 10:15 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. and Meeting for Worship based on expectant silence will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“This year, I am pleased to announce that our students will be studying the lives of people that have shown heroism, love of others, concern for our world and held the spirit of God’s Light in their own lives,” said Nancy Martin of Newtown, Clerk of the Children’s Religious Education Committee. “During this time, our students will also be thinking deeply about their own lives. When have they cared about others? How have they helped others in need? How can a child show bravery? What place does the Light of God play in our lives?”
Added Marguerite Chandler of Newtown, Clerk of the Adult Class Committee, “The Adult Class this year plans to feature Spiritual Journeys by Meeting members, stories about our historic graveyard, Quaker practices regarding worship. and a series on Quaker organizations in the area, such as Friends Fiduciary on investing based on Quaker principles, Historic Arch Street Meetinghouse in Philadelphia, and Friends Publishing Company with its print and online publications reaching over one million people annually.
The opening session of the adult class on September 15 at 9:45 a.m. will be a sing-along hootenanny with children and adults led by Meeting member, Debbie Watts, Head of Music at the Hun School in New Jersey.
Newtown Friends Meeting co-founded by “Peaceable Kingdom” painter, Edward Hicks, in 1815, is open to all who wish to attend. Regular First Day Education classes (Sunday School) for all ages during the academic year begin at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship begins at 11 a.m.
