Mark Laskow, Pittsburgh Quaker, Lawyer, Business Executive, and Civic Volunteer will present his Spiritual Journey to the adult class at historic Newtown Friends Meetinghouse Sunday, April 24, at 9:45 a.m.
During his professional career Mark Laskow worked for 5 years at a large Pittsburgh firm, now Reed Smith, then joined The Hillman Company, a privately owned investment company. During his tenure at Hillman, Mark served on the board of Kenetech Corporation, at the time the nation’s largest wind power company, and Exide corporation, the largest manufacturer of lead acid batteries. He was responsible for drilling about 600 oil and gas wells, all in the U.S. After 21 years with Hillman, Mark became CEO of Greycourt & Co., an independent investment advisor to wealthy families.
Mark’s civic involvement in Pittsburgh began with Penn Circle Community High School, serving as initial Chair of the Board. He currently serves as Chair of the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, Vice Chair of UPMC Health System and chair of its health plan.
Laskow recently retired as the first chair of a foundation that administers what was, at the time, the largest philanthropic gift ever by an individual to higher education. He has chaired a number of other foundations and serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. In 2011 the Allegheny County Medical Society awarded Mark its Benjamin Rush Individual Public Health Award.
Mark grew up in the Philadelphia area, attended Catholic primary schools (Melrose and Gwynedd Mercy), then The Hill School, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mark Laskow is a member of the Pittsburgh Quaker Meeting and currently participates in the Quaker Worship Group in Key West Florida.
Newtown Friends Meeting co-founded by “Peaceable Kingdom” painter and Quaker minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, is open to all who wish to attend. Regular First Day Education classes (Sunday School) for all ages begin at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship (in person or on zoom) begins at 11 a.m.
