Tim Mammel, artist, poet, and a member of the Worship and Ministry Committee of Newtown Friends Meeting, will lead a discussion on The Shared Stream of Community Worship: Giving and Receiving at the Newtown Friends Meetinghouse, 219 Court Street, at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, October 18. Following the discussion, there will be worship in the manner of Friends at 11:00 a.m. with people speaking out of silence as they are moved to do so.The public is welcome at all events.
Quaker worship is based on expectant silence with no pre-arranged program of singing, scripture or sermon. Anyone present may be inspired by the Divine to offer a message to the group. Tim Mammel will lead the second session about Quaker worship which turns to the invisible connections among those who worship together. Mammel said, “Each person has a role in deepening the worship of others. Although our meetings are not entirely silent, the spoken word belongs to the whole.”
“We will explore how we let go of ourselves and become one with the worshiping body, and how we receive spoken ministry as part of that whole rather than as an individual reaction. We will also consider how each person contributes to the depth and centering of worship, either by offering spoken ministry or by listening and being present so that deep ministry can arise.
Tim Mammel is a lifelong Quaker and active member of the Newtown Friends Meeting, a multimedia artist of painting, digital art, video production, and graphic design, and a teacher of art in hospitals, residential facilities, mainstream schools, and special education settings.
