Laura Kinnel, Newtown Meeting member, Math teacher at George School, and NYT Crossword Puzzle Constructor will speak on “Let There Be Light” at the Newtown Quaker Meetinghouse at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 28. Laura Taylor Kinnel, Newtown Quaker Meeting member, George School math teacher, and multiple New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle constructor.

Laura Kinnel’s title, “Let There Be Light” is itself a short crossword puzzle with five possible answers to the question: What’s a 5-letter word for………

  1. Cheerful, amusing, entertaining
  2. Brilliance
  3. Not heavy
  4. That which brings clarity
  5. A Quaker metaphor for that of God in each person

Laura Taylor Kinnel has always enjoyed puzzles and wordplay and she learned to love the Sunday New York Times crossword as she watched in awe as her grandmother completed them every week. This love eventually led her to constructing her own crosswords for students, friends, family, and—recently—publication. Laura is a member of Newtown Meeting who teaches math and is the director of studies at George School.

Laura will share a bit about her journey from crossword enjoyer to constructor. She will also engage the audience in having fun puzzling together in a way designed to amuse, enlighten, and engage those who’ve never done a crossword, those who do crosswords every day, and everyone in between.

Newtown Friends Meeting, co-founded by the Quaker artist and minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, holds services every First Day (Sunday). During the school year, First Day classes for children and adults are at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship is at 11:00 a.m. Childcare is provided. All meetings are open to the public and visitors are warmly welcomed.
