Climate Change: Imagining Ourselves as Part of the Solution — Jan 19

Ruth Darlington, Clerk of Medford Friends Meeting (NJ), will speak on Drawdown: Imagining Ourselves as Part of the Solution to Climate Change at 9:45 a.m., Sunday, January 19 at the Newtown Quaker Meetinghouse, 219 Court Street.   Following the presentation, there will be worship in the manner of Friends at 11:00 a.m., with people speaking out of the silence as they are moved to do so.

Project Drawdown is a research organization that “reviews, analyses, and identifies the most viable global climate solutions…and partners with communities, policy-makers, non-profits, businesses, investors, and philanthropists to identify and deploy science-based, effective climate solutions — as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible.”

Drawdown’s website goes on to say:  “Stopping global warming is possible, with solutions that exist today. In order to do this, we must work together to achieve Drawdown, the point when greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere start to decline.”  Drawdown lists 80 solutions available now which “reduce greenhouse gases by avoiding emissions and/or by sequestering carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere.”  Among those listed are: refrigerant management, wind turbines, biodegradable plastics, household and industrial recycling, solar farms, wave and tidal electricity generation, clean cookstoves, green roofs, and waste-to-energy electricity generation.

Ruth Darlington is a founding member of the Medford Quaker Meeting’s climate change group.  Ruth is also co-clerk of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Eco Justice and is a representative from PYM to Quaker Earthcare Witness, a Quaker activist organization regarding issues of the environment.

Ruth Darlington worked for many years in publishing and then for a non-profit behavioral health agency, retiring in 2017 as the agency’s Human Resources Coordinator.  Since then she has devoted her time and energy to the climate crisis.  After taking a course on Drawdown given by the local Pachamama Alliance chapter, Ruth has worked to make the workshops available to Quakers throughout the tri-state area.
